Why Banksy Inspires My Creativity (and Why I Can’t Wait for the Exhibition This Morning)

I’ve always believed that the truest art punches through the noise. It doesn’t ask permission. It doesn’t wait for approval. It just lands. Banksy’s work does exactly that — and it’s why I’ve been counting down the days to see his exhibition in Auckland this morning.

To be honest, I hadn’t known about it, until on the drive down, as The Fates guided, I pumped into the man who did our tiling during our rennovations. “We’re going to see the Banksy” exhibit.

My heart jumped! “I want to go too!”

And then, as The Fates guided, my hotel was a walk away from the venue. So, I’m off today before I head home.

Banksy inspires me not just because he’s clever (which he is) or mysterious (which adds to the allure) but because he uses art, words, and pictures as a scalpel. A mirror. A megaphone. A weapon.

I’ve felt it bubbling in me for years — this frustration with power, with systems that exploit under the guise of helping, with banks, with governments, with slick campaigns that sell false dreams. And in the wake of all the crap recently.

And the whole dance of “regulation” that just ends up locking people out instead of letting them in — it’s like something in me snapped. Or rather… snapped awake.

IN IT FOR YOU FLYING PIG

That’s what Banksy does. His art wakes you up.

It grabs you by the collar and says:

“Hey. You see this, right? You’re not crazy. The system is rigged. And here it is, painted on a wall.”

crime pays

Franksy

There’s a certain magic to how he simplifies the message.
He distills it. Refines it.
Design school taught me how to do that — how to take a big idea and strip it back until it sings. Until it hits.
So when I woke up last night around midnight with a vision of a piggy bank on puppet strings — this fat, helpless icon of “saving” being controlled by unseen hands — I knew that wasn’t random. That was activating.

I started sketching. I started stenciling. I started speaking through images again.

One of them says CRIME PAYS under the piggy bank, a direct hit at how those in power get richer while the rest of us get strung along. Another has the piggy bank with wings, and graffiti-style text that reads IN IT FOR YOU — dripping with irony, of course, because we know who’s really benefitting. That was the New Zealand Labour Party’s message to New Zealand after they bankrupted the country, their leader fled (“Nothing more in the tank!) and the mob wanted to be voted in for another term. ‘In it for you.’

Yeah right. In the shit because of you.

It feels good to create this way. Raw. Real. Unapologetic.

Banksy reminds me that art can be protest.
Art can be truth-telling.
Art can be the soul’s revolt against bullshit.

So yes, I’m buzzing to see the exhibition this morning. Not because I need more proof of how brilliant he is — I already know. But because I want to stand in the room with that kind of energy. That courage. That conviction.

I want to soak it up, take it home, and turn it into something of my own.

Art that doesn’t sit pretty.

Art that pulls the mask off.

Art that tells you:

“You’re not alone. You’re just awake.”

See you on the other side!
