There is something deeply unexpected about Easter in Panama…
It’s not about chocolate.
Not about noise.
Not about excess.
It’s quieter.
Older.
Sacred in a way that stays with you.
After leaving New Zealand’s rush of sugar and spectacle, stepping into Panama felt like stepping into the true meaning of Easter—
a story of devotion, remembrance… and something we may have forgotten.
If you’ve ever wondered what Easter is really about—this might surprise you.

Instead of shop windows filled with chocolate and excess, the streets of Panama tell a different story.
Families dress with care and intention.
Little girls wear ribbons in their hair and soft, flowing dresses.
Boys are dressed in smart, respectful attire.
They walk together—calm, composed—toward churches.
They line the streets.
They gather in quiet anticipation.
They participate in Holy Week traditions, processions, and prayer.
This is Easter as it was meant to be:
A time of reverence.
A time of reflection.
A time of connection to something deeper than ourselves.

Jesus Easter Crucifiction Casco Viejo
Easter is not just a celebration.
It is a story of extremes.
Betrayal.
Persecution.
Suffering.
And ultimately—resurrection.
At its core, Easter asks us to confront both darkness and light.
It reminds us that transformation is rarely comfortable.
That rebirth often comes through breaking.
And that healing is always possible.

At the heart of the Easter story stands a woman whose role has long been misunderstood.
Mary Magdalene was the first to witness the risen Christ.
She recognized him.
She saw what others could not.
And yet, history reshaped her story.
She was diminished.
Misrepresented.
Labeled in ways that obscured her true spiritual authority.
Rather than being honored as the first apostle, she was reduced to a figure of controversy.
Why?
Because her story challenged power structures.
Because her presence affirmed the spiritual authority of women.
Today, many scholars and spiritual seekers are reclaiming her truth—
as a symbol of the sacred feminine, intuition, and direct knowing.

Walking through Casco Viejo, Panama’s historic old quarter, the churches are breathtaking.
Gold altars shimmer in candlelight.
Statues of the Virgin Mary stand crowned—Queen of Heaven.
Devotional imagery fills every corner.
And yet, beneath these layers, there are echoes of older stories.
Some believe that figures like the Virgin Mary carry symbolic lineage from ancient goddesses such as Isis—a mother, a healer, a resurrector of life.
Across history, sacred spaces have been rebuilt, rebranded, and reinterpreted.
Temples become churches.
Stories evolve.
Symbols remain.
And still, humanity continues to struggle with the same patterns:
Control.
Power.
Division.
Easter is also a reminder of something deeply uncomfortable:
History repeats.
We have seen persecution before.
We have seen sacred spaces destroyed and rebuilt in the name of power.
And we continue to see it today.
Across the world, religious and cultural tensions persist.
Places of worship are contested.
Belief systems are used to divide rather than unite.
And yet, at the center of the Easter story is a radically different message.
Jesus did not preach war.
He preached love.
He preached forgiveness—even in the face of betrayal.
“Forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
But today, we can no longer claim ignorance.
We understand the consequences of greed, hatred, and vengeance.
We see clearly how suffering is created.
And so the question becomes:
Will we choose differently?
This is the true gift of Easter.
Not indulgence.
Not distraction.
But reflection.
A return inward.
A moment to pause and ask:
Easter invites us to slow down.
To be quiet.
To be present.

On Easter Monday, my intention was simple:
Let love guide your choices.
And so I listened.
I sat by the pool and sketched the flowers around me—
alive, vibrant, unapologetically themselves.
I rested in a hammock, letting the rhythm of nature slow me down.
I meditated.
I reflected.
I breathed.
And then I reached out—
sending a newsletter to my community, sharing beauty, gratitude, and inspiration.
Because in a world that can feel heavy,
choosing beauty is an act of devotion.

Easter is not about what we consume.
It is about who we become.
It is an invitation to:
Because resurrection is not just a historical event.
It is a daily choice.
A quiet, powerful return to love.
Being in Panama at Easter has reminded me of something essential:
That spirituality is not found in excess.
It is found in presence.
In stillness.
In reverence.
In the simple act of choosing love—again and again.
And perhaps that is the message we are still learning.
And yet, there is also the uneasy truth that peace needs protecting.

Peace Needs Protecting — Casco Viejo
There is a quiet truth you feel walking the streets of Casco Viejo…
Peace is sacred.
And what is sacred is protected.
On every corner stood men and women in uniform—present, watchful, steady.
Not as a symbol of fear, but of reassurance.
A visible reminder that peace does not simply exist…
it is chosen, upheld, and guarded.
Panama is a country without an army.
And yet, it is deeply committed to protecting the peace within its borders.
There is something profoundly moving in that.
Because true peace is not passive.
It is intentional.
It says:
This is a place where safety matters.
Where harmony is valued.
Where those who would seek to harm, to take, or to disturb—are met with a firm boundary.
And walking those streets, you feel it.
Not tension.
But presence.
Not fear.
But care.
A collective agreement—spoken without words—
that peace is worth protecting.
