I have such joy in my work…

Vincent van Gogh once said, “I have such joy in my work…”
The Painter’s Garden brings that joy to life, weaving reflections on art, flowers, and resilience into an uplifting journey.

And I have joy, too, after receiving this lovely review, I published a beautiful hardcover copy.

it is so beautiful

“WOW! I want this in hardcopy, it is so beautiful. It is gorgeous, I love the way the author has entered Van Gogh’s mind (so to speak), and given life to his thoughts on color, movement, emotion, and life in general. There is such joy and wonder as he paints, and at times a whiff of sadness and even feelings of isolation, but the joy of his paintings are an emotional celebration of his love for his art.”

EXCERPT:

Author’s Note

When I work in my studio, surrounded by blooms and the soft hum of nature, I often think of Vincent van Gogh. His floral paintings—radiant, expressive, and so full of life—have always been a source of inspiration for me. There was a beautiful sweetness in the way he captured flowers, each petal painted with hope, resilience, and the joy of existence.

The Painter’s Garden: Life Lessons from Flowers, Art, and Nature grew out of that inspiration. Through seasons and blooms, I reflected on the quiet wisdom flowers offer and imagined what Vincent would have felt when he painted his radiant blooms.

He saw the strength in sunflowers, the fleeting joy of tulips, and the steadfast endurance of chrysanthemums. Each chapter then became a canvas for the lessons Vincent shared with me, shaped by our love of art, nature, and the unpredictable rhythms of life. Like Vincent, I believe that art has the power to heal.

I imagined Vincent narrating this book, sharing the inspiration behind the most famous and loved flowers he painted.  I have blended some images of paintings inspired by Vincent to accompany his words.

As I crafted this book, we united in our shared sense of wonder. The Painter’s Garden is a celebration of life’s fleeting yet meaningful moments—a reminder to embrace where you are, to bloom in your own way, and to find beauty in every season.

I invite you to step into this garden with me, to pause, to reflect, and to uncover the sweetness in every petal, whether in the garden of your mind or the flowers you behold

With gratitude,

Cassie

CHAPTER 1

Sunflowers: unapologetic yellows—alive, defiant, unbending

The sunflowers stood there in their brilliant, unapologetic yellows—alive, defiant, unbending. They were a riot of life in the stillness of my small studio in Arles. As I painted them, I imagined them laughing at me, or perhaps with me, as I dared to capture their beauty on canvas.

No one buys my work, I thought. No one sees the world the way I do. Yet, the sunflowers seemed to whisper back, Paint anyway. Stand tall. Blaze against the shadows.

They reminded me of something my brother Theo had said. He believed in me, even when the rest of the world turned away. “You have a light, Vincent,” he’d said once, his voice steady. “Even if they don’t see it yet, it doesn’t mean it isn’t there.”

So I painted. Not for the critics, not for the buyers who might never come, but for myself. For the joy of creating something that lived outside my mind. The yellows—ochre, cadmium, chrome—felt like hope on the bristles of my brush. Each petal, a tiny rebellion. Each stroke, a silent promise.

As the days went by, the sunflowers began to wilt in their vase, but I painted them all the same. Their decay didn’t feel like failure; it felt like a reminder. Life is fleeting, yes, but it is also vibrant and worth celebrating, even in its impermanence.

When I finished the last canvas, I sat back and looked at the sunflowers. They weren’t perfect. Neither am I. But they were alive in a way I hadn’t thought possible. They burned, even against the backdrop of my failures.

Perhaps the world would never understand me. Perhaps they would. Either way, I would keep painting, keep burning, like these sunflowers. Because giving up would be the true failure.

And so, the sunflowers became my silent companions, my testament to resilience. A reminder to never stop, even when the shadows crept closer and the nights grew longer. As long as I could hold a brush, I would find a way to blaze.

CHAPTER 2

Roses: hiding their hearts like secrets

The roses were different. They weren’t wild like the sunflowers, reaching toward the heavens in bold defiance. Roses demanded precision, a softer touch. Their petals curled inward, hiding their hearts like secrets. Perhaps that’s why I painted them—to remind myself that beauty isn’t always loud. Sometimes, it’s quiet, reserved, hidden beneath layers of thorns and whispers.

When I arranged them in the vase, I thought about their delicacy, their fragility. Each petal was perfect in its imperfection, slightly bruised at the edges but still vibrant, still alive. I thought of my own bruises—of rejection, isolation, loneliness—and I told myself that even in those moments, I could still create something worthwhile.

As I dipped my brush into the palette, I chose colors that felt warm, forgiving: soft pinks, deep reds, muted greens. The strokes came slower this time, more deliberate. With each layer, I found myself calming. Roses taught me patience. They taught me that not everything in life bursts forth like a sunflower. Some things bloom quietly, carefully, in their own time.

I painted them to remind myself that even beauty has thorns. The world’s indifference, the critics’ dismissal, the struggle to be seen—those were my thorns. But the roses didn’t seem to mind theirs. They grew anyway, their blooms soft and full against the sharpness of their stems.

By the time I finished, the roses on the canvas felt more alive than the ones before me. They didn’t speak of defiance like the sunflowers; they spoke of resilience, of the quiet strength it takes to grow in a world that can cut you down.

I stared at them for a long time after the paint dried. Maybe the roses didn’t blaze like the sunflowers, but they endured. And for now, enduring felt enough.
