There are so many pressing issues in the world aren’t there. Which is why I love a good distraction.

Right now, besides my normal career-combo of coaching, writing and reading love stories, I’ve been painting. I received a new commission the other morning. I was so delighted. The short brief was compelling…”I would love to commission you to conjure up an exquisite piece of art…Love all the vibrant memories my special lady brings. Love, sea, sand, salt and pohutukawas.”

People often ask where do I grab my inspiration from. In this case, it’s the beautiful image of the abstract pattern on the dress of the gentleman’s beloved wife. She passed several years ago from cancer. This has been such a joy to paint as I know the healing power art can bring, a loving hug during times of sadness and a big vibrant reminder of love which endures.

So, while for many Christmas may not feel like reason to celebrate, the resilience and endurance born by many of us this year is celebration enough. We are still standing—and importantly planning ahead. As one of my clients said to me yesterday, somewhat incredulously “How many people plan out 5 to 10 years?”

The truth is that very few people do. But the ones who dream of a better life and come to me for coaching always do. “Begin with the end in mind,” is one of my favourite maxims from success guru, Stephen Covey. That and “sharpen the saw,” which is why investing in your growth and development is so important. It’s where the winners part from the losers because the losers stay stuck.
