Art has always held a certain magic for me—a way to connect with something beyond the tangible, beyond the ordinary. But nothing prepared me for the moment I encountered Vincent van Gogh’s Roses at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

It wasn’t just a painting; it was an awakening.

It was one of those crisp, sunny New York mornings when the city hums with possibility. I had planned a visit to the Met as a treat to myself—a chance to step away from the daily noise and immerse in creativity. I never imagined that Van Gogh’s Roses would leave such a lasting imprint on my soul.

As I wandered through the Impressionist galleries, the bold, expressive brushstrokes of Van Gogh called to me—alive, vibrant, unmistakable. Then I turned a corner, and there it was: Roses.

A simple vase of pale blooms, spilling gently outward. Their soft greens and whites glowed with an inner light against the muted backdrop. The subject was deceptively simple, yet the painting pulsed with a quiet, powerful energy.

Van Gogh’s Roses didn’t just speak to me—it breathed something into me. A reminder that beauty, even in its gentlest form, has the power to transform.

I stood there, transfixed. The colors, so delicate yet deliberate, seemed to carry a whisper of hope—a message from the artist himself. I had read about how Van Gogh painted Roses during his stay at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, a time of both turmoil and profound creativity. Knowing this, the painting felt like a letter across time, a reminder that beauty can emerge even from pain.

I leaned in closer, studying every detail—the feathery edges of the petals, the way the brushstrokes seemed to ripple and move like they had a life of their own. It was as if Van Gogh had captured not just flowers, but a fleeting moment of peace, an offering of grace. And in that moment, I felt it too—a calmness, a quiet joy I hadn’t realized I needed.

What struck me most was the imperfection in the composition. The flowers weren’t pristine; some were wilting, their leaves curling. Yet, that imperfection made them all the more real, all the more human. It reminded me that life isn’t about perfection—it’s about finding beauty in the chaos, in the fleeting, in the messy yet extraordinary now.

I don’t know how long I stood there. Time seemed to stretch and dissolve as I let the painting speak to me. When I finally stepped back, I felt lighter, as if I had left behind some invisible weight. Van Gogh’s Roses had offered me more than just a moment of beauty; it had given me a glimpse of resilience, of finding light even in the darkest times.

That day at the Met changed the way I see art—and life. It reminded me that creativity is more than an escape; it’s a bridge to something greater, a way to connect with the universal human experience. Van Gogh didn’t know me, but through his work, he touched something deep within me. And that, I think, is the true power of art.

Vincent’s passion for painting has inspired my own creativity in so many ways. Paintings, books and more. In my writing room I have a little painting on board, How Right It Is To Love Roses,.

It is keeping me company until she is sold to a beautiful new owner. I hope this painting, as I do with all my paintings, brings joy, beauty and love into my new collectors life, as Vincent’s paintings have to mine.

Has a painting ever changed your life? Maybe it sparked a memory, inspired a dream, or left you in awe? I’d love to know! Together let’s share our stories of the power of art to transform and uplift.
