How to Stay In Your Heart

In a world that often prizes intellect over intuition, logic over love, and reason over resonance, it’s easy to forget the quiet, unshakeable power of the heart. Yet, the heart is more than a mere muscle, more than a biological pump. It is a gateway to the infinite, a bridge to the cosmos where the language of the soul speaks in whispers, and the currents of the universe pulse with timeless wisdom.

Explore how to stay in your heart amidst a world that values intellect over intuition and logic over love.

Conditioned to Forget the Heart

From a young age, we are conditioned to value the mind above all else – to measure, analyze, and categorize our world into neat, predictable boxes. We are taught that success comes from intellectual prowess, that rationality is the path to power, and that emotions are a weakness to be tamed or suppressed. We learn to speak the language of facts and figures, to navigate the world with sharp minds but guarded hearts.

Our schooling, our workplaces, even our relationships often reinforce this conditioning. We are praised for being logical, efficient, and objective – for thinking our way through life rather than feeling our way into it. Over time, we become disconnected from our hearts, mistaking their whispers for foolishness, their longings for distractions, and their guidance for mere sentimentality.

We forget that the heart is not a fragile thing. It is fierce, resilient, and profoundly intelligent. It perceives the world not in linear, calculated steps, but in spirals of understanding, in waves of empathy, in the quiet pulse of knowing. It sees beyond the surface, sensing the unspoken, the unseen, the unmeasurable.

Reclaiming the Heart’s Throne

But it is not too late to return. To reclaim the heart’s throne, to restore the balance between intellect and intuition, we must unlearn what we have been taught and remember what we have always known – that the heart is the true ruler, the seat of the soul, the source of our deepest wisdom.

Staying in your heart means surrendering to the flow of life, trusting the unseen, and allowing yourself to feel deeply – even when it’s uncomfortable, even when it challenges the mind’s tight grip on control. It means choosing love over fear, connection over separation, and presence over distraction. It means remembering that we are not merely thinking beings, but feeling, sensing, loving souls.

9 Things That Take You Out of Your Heart

  1. Overthinking and constant worry
  2. Comparing yourself to others
  3. Living in the past or future, rather than the present
  4. Fear and self-doubt
  5. Judgment and criticism – of yourself and others
  6. People-pleasing and seeking external validation
  7. Rushing and over-scheduling your life
  8. Alcohol and substances that dull your awareness
  9. Disconnecting from nature and your body’s wisdom
  1. Breathe Deeply and Slowly – The breath is the bridge between the mind and the heart. When you feel yourself slipping into overthinking or anxiety, place your hand over your heart, close your eyes, and breathe deeply. Allow each inhale to expand your heart’s field and each exhale to release tension.
  2. Listen to Your Heart’s Voice – When faced with a decision, take a moment to tune into your heart’s wisdom. It may not speak in words but in feelings, in a quiet knowing, in the warmth or tightness in your chest. Trust that this silent language holds a deeper truth than the mind’s chatter.
  3. Embrace Vulnerability – Staying in your heart requires courage, for the heart is where we feel both the heights of joy and the depths of pain. It is where we are most alive, most authentic, most fully human.
  4. Surround Yourself with Beauty – Beauty has a way of softening the mind’s defenses, drawing us back into the heart’s embrace. Art, nature, music, and the laughter of loved ones all have the power to reconnect us to the heart’s intelligence.
  5. Practice Gratitude – Gratitude is the language of the heart. When we focus on what we love and appreciate, we align ourselves with the heart’s expansive, magnetic field.

Remember, the heart is not a weak or sentimental place. It is the seat of your soul’s power, the throne of your highest self, the place where the infinite intelligence of the cosmos whispers its secrets.

So, the next time your intellect tries to seize the crown, remind it gently: The heart rules here.

This is a card I drew today from The Art of Life Inspiration Deck

STAY IN YOUR HEART

“Your heart connects you to the cosmos where infinite intelligence rules. Remind your intellect who needs to rule.”

The painting accompanying this message is Lovemarks 11, and was commissioned by a lady who loved a similar painting that had already sold. The painting is from the Soften Series.

Created as the world was reeling from the economic, physical and emotional fallout of Covid-19 the Soften collection embraces GO-LOV 20, the antidote to fear offered by Neuroscientist Dr Joe Dispenza. As Leonardo da Vinci said, “Without love, what is there?”

“Soften” offered an antidote to life’s harsh edges. Created with passion and infused with love the palette embodied pinks, lavenders, ethereal warm whites and sunny yellows. She Smiled Softly is another painting from this collection which is now hanging in a Wellness and Beauty Spa in Kerikeri

Colour is one of the most profound and simple ways I know to connect to your heart.

The Buddha also teaches that kindness, compassion, joy and equanimity (calmness and composure, especially in a difficult situation) is the way to create a boundless heart.

How do you stay in your heart during both the good and the bad?

Feedback from a client who I drew this card for:

“Thanks Cassandra,

Yes the cards have arrived.  Interesting thought for me about stay in your heart.  I have been working through do I go for a full on job with Government and get the big pay packet or do I stay with what I love as Creative Advisor and have always been fulfilled with my passion for the Arts and will keep the thoughts to my role and pray that my hours increase and I can develop more of this Creative energy I have for the Far North for our future.  I have a lot to do in this space and believe my heart is telling me that also.”
