Yesterday, I sold my Italian-style blue couch — a bespoke designer piece I created over twenty years ago. Letting it go felt bittersweet, but also beautiful. It’s all part of this new season of release — stripping back to the bare essentials, opening space for whatever comes next.
My hairdresser (a young 74-year-old glamour queen) told me she had moved recently, but she struggled to let go of her possessions. So she took everything with her. Again.
We’re just four weeks away from settlement day — 10 December — when a lovely new family will become the next guardians of the legacy home we created in Kerikeri. As I write this, I can feel both nostalgia and excitement. We’re not taking all the old things with us this time. It’s a conscious act of decluttering, renewal, and trust — a soulful letting go.

That blue couch wasn’t just furniture. It was a piece of art — a custom design inspired by Italian craftsmanship. I commissioned it when I built an architecturally designed home high on the Wellington hills. Everyone said it couldn’t be done — that the site was too steep. But with faith, creativity, and a bit of magic, it happened—I built a new home. On my own! A solo, working mother.

Years later, when Laurie and I found our Soul Sanctuary here in the Bay of Islands, everything somehow fit perfectly — the couches, the paintings, the light, the love. For nearly ten years, this has been our haven.
Last night, the living room looked a little emptier without that couch, but my heart was full. The new owner’s daughter, Lily, came along to help her mum choose. Her eyes lit up as soon as she saw it.
“I love it,” she said, curling up and putting her feet up. “It’s perfect.”
And in that moment, I knew it was time.
That’s the magic of letting go — when something you once loved becomes part of someone else’s joy.

My little blue couch was originally custom-designed for my little tree house in Brooklyn. You may enjoy my blog>>

We left Wellington 10 years ago, dreaming of winters that felt like summer. At the time it seemed like an impossible dream. But as Dr Suess once said, “It’s kinda fun achieving the impossible.”
We did! We made that dream come true, just as we are about to make the dream of living all year round in Spring!
