Take Time Slow a while and behold the beauty of a flower

Art of life inspiration deck behold the beauty of a flower

Today’s inspiration for you is from The Art of Life Inspiration Deck.

In our fast-paced world, where schedules are tight and distractions are endless, it’s easy to rush past the small wonders that surround us. But what if the key to a more joyful, inspired life isn’t in doing more, but in slowing down?

Flowers, in their quiet and unassuming way, remind us to pause, breathe, and appreciate the beauty in simplicity. They bloom without hurry, unfolding petal by petal, as if whispering a gentle truth: there is no need to rush; beauty unfolds in its own time.

The legendary artist Georgia O’Keeffe, whose luminous floral paintings brought attention to the intricate details of nature, once said:

“Nobody sees a flower—really—it is so small it takes time—we haven’t time—and to see takes time, like to have a friend takes time.”

This wisdom speaks to the modern dilemma of busyness. We see flowers every day, yet how often do we truly see them? Do we notice the soft gradient of a petal, the delicate veins running through each bloom, or the way sunlight filters through its leaves?

O’Keeffe didn’t just paint flowers; she studied them, letting their quiet elegance teach her about life, patience, and presence. Her work invites us to do the same—to lean in and truly behold the world around us.

Taking time to observe a flower is an act of mindfulness. It pulls us out of worry and distraction and roots us in the present moment. A single blossom can teach us about resilience, grace, and the joy of simply being.

O’Keeffe expressed this beautifully when she said:

Imagine if we allowed ourselves to enter that world—not just with flowers, but with everything. The colors of a sunset. The texture of a well-worn book. The laughter of a loved one. When we truly see, the ordinary becomes extraordinary.

An Invitation to Pause

So today, I invite you:

• Find a flower. It could be in a garden, by the roadside, or in a vase on your table.

• Pause. Take a deep breath and simply look.

• Notice its shape, its color, its scent.

• Allow yourself to slow down, if only for a moment.

This simple act—beholding the beauty of a flower—might just open your eyes to the wonder that has been around you all along.

After all, as Georgia O’Keeffe showed us, beauty isn’t something we need to chase. It’s already here, waiting to be seen.

And sometimes, all it takes is slowing down.

Inspired by the beauty of a peony

Inspired by the beauty of a peony and the desire of Georgia O’Keefe to encourage us all to slow a while and behold the beauty of a flower that painting that accompanies this card sold to a new collector who has since purchased several other flower paintings

Created to complement the macro botanical photos of Jane Ussher who participated with me in the Return to Love, Group Exhibition, 2021 (With Jane Ussher and Grant Gallagher)- scroll to enjoy some of the memories (smack in the middle of the Covid mayhem): https://www.thejoyfulartist.co.nz/cassandras-gallery-and-artrangitane/

This card is a lovely reminder to embrace the mindful stillness of just being and seeing. As I wrote this post originally I had returned from the markets where my partner gifted me a large posy of dahlias. This card inspired me to create some paintings of them at a macro (close up level).

This is what happens when you go to the local orchid show…. plenty of inspiration for new paintings here

The unexpected power of the beauty of a flower

The beauty of a flower has a profound impact on our health and wellbeing, reaching deep into our hearts and souls to nourish and heal. It is a remarkable reminder of the interconnectedness between nature and human beings. When we take the time to behold the beauty of a flower, we invite a multitude of benefits into our lives.

calming effect on our minds and bodies

First and foremost, gazing at a flower can have a calming effect on our minds and bodies. In a world filled with constant stimuli and stress, the simplicity and elegance of a flower can offer a respite from the chaos. The vibrant colors, delicate petals, and intricate details of a flower captivate our senses, redirecting our attention to the present moment. As we focus on its beauty, our minds naturally quieten, allowing stress and anxiety to dissipate.

promote mindfulness

Moreover, the act of beholding a flower can promote mindfulness, bringing us into a state of heightened awareness and appreciation. It encourages us to slow down, to be fully present in the moment, and to engage our senses. As we observe a flower’s graceful movement in the breeze, inhale its delicate fragrance, and touch its velvety petals, we cultivate a deeper connection to nature. This connection nourishes our spirit, reminding us of the inherent beauty and wonder that exists in the world.

uplift our mood

Beyond the immediate sense of calm and presence, the beauty of a flower also holds the power to uplift our mood and enhance our emotional well-being. Scientific studies have shown that exposure to natural elements, including flowers, triggers the release of endorphins and dopamine in our brains. These “feel-good” chemicals promote feelings of happiness, joy, and contentment. The sight of a flower can evoke positive emotions, soothing our souls and providing a much-needed boost during challenging times.

positive impact on our physical health

In addition to its emotional benefits, beholding the beauty of a flower can also have a positive impact on our physical health. Research suggests that exposure to natural elements, such as flowers, can lower blood pressure, decrease heart rate, and reduce muscle tension. This natural stress reduction not only benefits our immediate well-being but also contributes to long-term health. When we take the time to immerse ourselves in nature’s beauty, we create an environment that supports healing and restoration.

inspire creativity

Furthermore, the beauty of a flower has the potential to inspire creativity and ignite a sense of wonder within us. The intricate patterns and colours found in nature’s artwork can spark our imagination and fuel our creative endeavours. Whether we are artists, writers, or simply enthusiasts, the beauty of a flower can serve as a muse, encouraging us to express ourselves and tap into our innate creativity.

gratitude and interconnectedness

Lastly, beholding the beauty of a flower can foster a sense of gratitude and interconnectedness. It reminds us of the fragile yet resilient nature of life and the importance of cherishing each moment. We become aware of the intricate web of life, where every living being has a role to play. This realization cultivates a sense of gratitude for the beauty and abundance that surrounds us, nurturing a positive outlook and deepening our connection to the world.

Beholding the beauty of a flower is a simple yet profound act that can significantly impact our health and well-being. Its calming effect, ability to promote mindfulness, enhance mood, and inspire creativity all contribute to a holistic sense of well-being. By taking the time to appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds us, we invite a sense of tranquillity, joy, and connectedness into our lives. So, let us pause, embrace the beauty of a flower, and allow its transformative power to unfold within us.
